FAQs

  • We’re always looking for new volunteers. This could be as a coach or just to help out on busy match days. We appreciate all help. If you’re interested and would like some more information please get in touch on our contact page.

  • We try to arrange a mixture of home and away games/sessions so please be prepared to travel occasionally.

  • Once your child is in the Under 9’s group they will start to learn how to safely make a tackle and be tackled. Before this, there is zero contact and your child will learn the skills of the game through tag rugby.

  • To begin, your child will only need comfortable clothing that you don’t mind getting muddy. In the summer, a sturdy pair of trainers and in the winter, a set of studded/moulded rugby boots. Remember to wrap up according to the forecast avoiding buckles and zips.

Children playing contact rugby (Under9s upward) need to wear a gum shield for matches and contact training. These can be purchased from us directly for £5.00… cheaper than visiting the dentist!

You can order shorts, training tops, hoodies, boot bags and waterproof tops from here.

To buy new playing shirts, club socks and gum shields please email garfc.kit@yahoo.com.

You can find out more about the correct kit and how to order here.

  • To put it simply, yes. They will need to be studded or moulded to provide the right support for their feet when on softer ground.

For the younger kids, a pair of sturdy trainers during the summer will be sufficient but please ensure ALL children playing contact rugby are wearing the correct footwear for their own safety and for the safety of others. You can read more here.

  • Headscarves and other religious head-dress can be worn to rugby training and for rugby matches, providing they do not cause a danger to the wearer or other players. Any pins or metal/rigid fasteners should be removed.

  • Only your soul and a bag of biscuits…

Ok fine, we’ll settle for subs. Each age range varies so have a look at the “Teams and Fees” page in the main menu.

  • Not necessarily. There are strict rules on how much contact sport the children can play throughout the year, however, coaches may occasionally run technique and fitness focused sessions during the holidays.

  • The wonderful Donna Summersett has set up a Pre-Loved Kit Box. Drop her an email on garfc.kit@yahoo.com for any enquiries.

If you have any hand-me-downs you can donate we’d love to add them to the box. Give them to your child’s coach at the next session.
